Our Mission
Mweusi Johari was conceptually created to showcase the work of artists that have demonstrated the ability to create quality pieces, but have yet to put their best body of work on display.
The mission of this brand is to mine the Black community of artists, designers, writers, and creators, uplifting their artistry and reminding the world not only of their value, but of the journey that brought them there.
Mweusi Johari will periodically select artist’s to create a series of Designer T-Shirts.
Why T-Shirts?
They level the playing field on two fronts:
1. Everybody wears them (Exposure, access to positive messaging)
2. They’re pretty affordable (Approachable)
Putting these creative designs on T-Shirts:
- Will spark interest in the artist ($)
- Showcase their skills
- Raise art awareness overall
- Create an environment
Mweusi Johari translates to Black Diamond and these talented individuals are about to truly shine.
Through out American history the english language has been easy to misinterpret, misconstrue or distorted. This is usually to the detriment of minorities, the socially misunderstood and disenfranchised. Mweusi Johari is Swahili for Black Jewel (meaning person of African descent, jewel; meaning precious gem). The term (Mweusi Johari) is concrete and beyond societal reproach. It serves as positive reinforcement to the fact that regardless of your origins, you can overcome all forms of adversity and generational disadvantages, as did the African patriots who fought to be acknowledged as equal and capable human beings. Their sacrifices should be celebrated and upheld for generations to come. Mweusi Johari is designer essence-wear created by the gifted artists and creatives that we have been fortunate enough to encounter and admire over the years.
It is my hope that Mweusi Johari globally represents strength, creativity, cultural pride and unity among all people.
Some damage remains, yet we stand, bruised, but beautiful.
